Reina Sofia museum (Queen Sofia museum)

XX century and contemporary art museum

The Reine Sofia museum (Queen Sogia Museum) was inaugurated on 1992. Is the 3 angle of the “Madrid art triangle”, compose by the Prado museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum the all 3 are in a 10 minutes’ walk distance.

On the permanent collection the most relevant artist are Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro represented by some of their best paintings. Just an example, you will find here “Guernica” painted by Pablo Picasso.

There are also collections from surrealist artist like Francis Picabia, René Magritte, Oscar Dominguez or Yves Tanguy.

Besides Pablo Picasso, there are other cubist artists like Juan Gris, George Braque, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger or Albert Gleizes. At last but not least you will also find some expressionist artists like Francis Bacon and Antonio Saura.

There are also other artist trends represented in the Reina Sofia museum, a non-exhaustive list will be: Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Diego Ribera, Alexander Calder, Roberto Matta, Mark Rothko, Antonio López Garcia, Antoni Tápies, Miquel Barcelo and Sam Francis.

I believe that it worth to spend at least a day to visit the “art triangle” museums, Prado museum, Thyssen Bornemisza museum and Reina Sofia, they are very closed and you will not be disappointed..

According to The Art Newspaper on 2016, Reina Sofia museum was the number #1 on Spain in terms of number of visitors.
