There are two main resorts about an hour away from the city center, plus a very unique indoor option:
- Valdesquí: The Local Favorite This is the largest and most popular resort near Madrid. It’s perfect for intermediate skiers and families. It has a very “local” vibe—expect to see Madrileños enjoying a tortilla sandwich in the sun after a few runs.
- Pro Tip: Go on a weekday if you can. The weekends get busy with locals!
- Puerto de Navacerrada: The Classic This is one of the oldest ski resorts in Spain. It’s divided into two areas: a simpler one for beginners and a more challenging one through beautiful pine forests. Even if you don’t ski, the village of Navacerrada is a beautiful place for a “mountain lunch” (think hearty stews and grilled meats).
- Madrid SnoZone (Xanadú): Skiing in July? If you’re visiting in the middle of summer but craving the cold, head to the Intu Xanadú mall. It houses one of the largest indoor ski slopes in Europe. It’s a bit surreal to go from 40°C heat outside to a frozen wonderland inside, but it’s a blast!
How to Get There (Without a Car)
This is the best part for tourists: You don’t need a rental car to reach the snow.
- The “Ski-Bus”: Take the 691 bus from the Moncloa transport hub. It takes you directly to the doors of both Navacerrada and Valdesquí.
- The Train: You can take the C-8 Cercanías train to Cercedilla and then hop on the charming “Nature Train” (C-9) that climbs up into the mountains. It’s one of the most scenic train rides in Spain!
